Koda was brought to our shelter this afternoon in terrible condition.
He is eight years old and weighs almost 200 pounds. He is one of the heaviest and biggest dogs we have ever seen.
He was surrendered to the shelter because his owners said they could no longer take care of him or pay for his thyroid meds. As you can see, he is not in the best condition. At more than 190 pounds, he is overweight; he should be more like 165-175 pounds. However, what he lacks in health, he makes up for in kindness. He is such a gentle giant.
Besides simply being very overweight, he came to us with kennel cough and infected eyes. He was filthy and covered in painful-looking raw spots and oozing pressure sores. He has what looks to be mange covering his chest and his back legs have a lot of fur missing where the skin underneath is inflamed or bleeding. Also, he has a large liquid-feeling tumor under his belly and one on his chest and shoulder.
He will be going to our vet in Gulf Shores on Monday to figure out what else we are dealing with besides the obvious. He will be fully vetted and will have bloodwork done to determine any underlying causes of his skin condition. Prayers are certainly welcomed.
In the meantime, he's already had a nice bath, a roll in the grass, and a coconut oil massage - he smells so much better now. I can imagine he feels a lot better too. He's currently snoozing away in his new foster home.. it's been a long day. Tonight, he will sleep soundly thanks to foster momma Tonya.
We hope to update you with better news Monday, but by the looks of him, he's got a long road ahead to recovery. Please donate whatever you can to help Koda get the many procedures he needs to be healthy and finally happy.
