Joker was surrendered by his family to the local county shelter, and he was tested and diagnosed with a very contagious and deadly disease called parvovirus.
When the Humane Society of Manatee County heard about Joker's case and was told that he was on the euthanasia list, we took him under our care and began treatments.
Parvovirus is highly contagious and is spread from dog to dog by direct or indirect contact with their feces. Vaccines can prevent this infection, but mortality can reach 91% in untreated cases. Treatment involves hospitalization in isolation. Survival rate depends on how quickly it is diagnosed.
Because of the severity of his situation, Joker has to be isolated and treated with multiple medications, round the clock observation, and a variety of tests. It was touch and go for two days.
We are happy to report that after 5 days of treatments and 24 hour care, Joker is now ready to be put into our adoption system, giving him a second chance to have a forever loving home.
The financial impact of saving Joker's life took a heavy toll on our rescue and we really need donations. Please consider donating to Joker's care so that the Humane Society of Manatee County can continue to help save the lives of more dogs like Joker.
