Poor Jerry is a dangerously skinny four-year-old boy who entered our local animal shelter about one week ago with puncture wounds all over his emaciated body.

We don't know the details of his past, including how long he's been suffering on the streets or the last time he ate a meal, but Jerry's agonizing pain had evolved into full-blown depression in the shelter.

With a pending euthanasia date hanging over his head, Jerry's world changed the moment our volunteers saved him from the shelter and transferred him to Blue River Animal Rescue. In fact, getting out of the shelter and into a safe environment is the most peace Jerry has felt in years.

Sadly, X-rays revealed that Jerry has an enlarged heart due to untreated heartworm disease. Doctors said that his prognosis is poor and treatment is limited. He's currently staying overnight at the veterinarian for assessment and we will have more information tomorrow.

Jerry will need a long-term foster who can provide him with proper care and make him feel as comfortable as possible. Either way, Jerry is safe in our care and we will make sure that he enjoys the happiest possible life.

We are doing everything in our power to help poor Jerry but we operate solely on donations and don't have enough funds for his critical medical treatment. We're relying on our generous supporters to help save this precious pup.

Jerry is at peace now Jerry was a last-minute rescue from euthanasia on October 18th. A core member of our team had spent the day at the city shelter taking photos and doing temp tests of all of the dogs in need and Jerry broke her heart. She had only spent a little time with him but she was hooked, she couldn’t stand the idea of this sweet boy dying at the shelter without a chance.

After bringing Jerry home we quickly realized he had a lot more going on than just external wounds. After several vet visits he was diagnosed with Chylothorax, and he needed surgery ASAP. With an enlarged heart, being emaciated, anemic, etc. Jerry’s prognosis was poor. Unfortunately, the vet said in Jerry’s current condition, he likely wouldn’t survive the surgery he needed. They drained a lot of fluid from his chest just last Monday, and by Thursday night he was really struggling. They drained more Friday and repeated X-rays, and they were significantly worse. He had inflammation in his lungs. She wasn’t even sure he wouldn’t decline over the weekend if his foster took him for a “good day.”

We know not everyone will agree with this decision, but couldn’t ask him to fight against those odds. He was tired. Jerry had something really bad happen to him. He had wounds and scars everywhere. He was missing toenails. He could barely stand. He looked like he had given up at BARC. We didn’t want him to die surrounded by strangers without a chance, and he didn’t. He had all the cuddles, pajamas, food, and bully sticks he could ask for. He was only with us for a short time, but we hope it made up for everything he went through, before landing at the shelter. He had lots of brownies (which he happily devoured) and love in the end. His foster held him until he was gone.

No more struggling to breathe. No more pain. He’s finally at peace. He’ll be cremated and coming home to us. We’re so sorry we couldn’t save you, Jerry. Life is unfair. If only we had met you sooner. We love you SO much. ❤

Jerry update!

He left the clinic yesterday and is doing great, in his foster home. Even though he’s obviously feeling cruddy, he hasn’t stopped wagging his tail. We had our vet do two more heartworm tests, to confirm his HW status. They showed he is indeed heartworm negative. This is essentially great news (as this tells us he isn’t in heartworm failure) but also means we don’t have an answer as to why his heart is enlarged.

As we knew before taking him on, it could be something we can’t fix, but we’re going to try all avenues to figure out what’s going on with him! His shallow/fast breathing concerns us, so we’ve set up an appointment with a cardiologist tomorrow. They will schedule him for an echocardiogram next week, so they can further assess him.

We were given an estimate of $1000+ for this procedure. We’re really going to need help covering this bill.
