Sumi's cleft palate is so deep that it opens to her sinuses. This puts her at great risk for aspiration and pneumonia. She is hand fed tiny bites of food, and drinks water form a hamster bottle. She is tiny, weighing 2.63 lbs. She had an initial vet consultation yesterday, and she will be having a consult with another vet next Monday. What we know so far is that Sumi will do best to wait for surgery until she's at least 6 months old. But if that's not possible, due to pneumonia risk or other complications, we may have to do it sooner. Even then, nothing is guaranteed. There's always a chance the cleft could re-open after surgery. This girl has a long road ahead of her! She's so darn cute that it's easy to forget she's actually quite fragile.

Introducing Sumi! This tiny puppy came into our care this weekend, at just 7.5 weeks old. She was born with a deep cleft palate. It's common for puppies to be put down when they are born with this kind of birth defect. But a vet tech involved at Sumi's birth convinced the breeder to let her save and tube feed the puppy until she was strong enough to be surrendered to rescue. We are so grateful to this vet tech, and to the breeder, for making the choices they did.
