When Sparkles was found, she had a broken jaw and a terrible infection in her mouth.
We rescued Sparkles from Chicago Animal Care and Control earlier this month. We could not touch her at first, and she would lunge and snap at us when we tried. We knew there was a sadness about her and much more she was not telling us. When we put her under anesthesia, we discovered her infected mouth, which was too extreme for a simple dental cleaning to repair, as well as her broken jaw. We now know that she was in a great deal of pain and was lashing out because of this. We started her on medication, including antibiotics and pain medication, and she is now beginning to feel more comfortable and trust us, even jumping into the arms of some of our volunteers.
However, Sparkles still needs advanced treatment to repair her mouth. She will need to see a specialist to have jaw and dental x-rays taken and then surgery to repair the problems. Most likely, this will not just be extractions of some or most of her teeth but wiring of her jaw back together.
Heartland Animal Shelter is a no-kill, non-profit organization. We need your donations to ensure that Sparkles becomes completely pain-free and is able to be adopted into the loving, forever home that she deserves.
