At around 3:30 PM on Tuesday, July 10th disaster struck HOPE.
While myself and two of our staff were watching the water began to rise inside the shelter. The sheer force of the storm flooded our main cat room, 2 of our dog rooms and our back entry and laundry room. Our only thought was the safety of the animals.
We moved the dogs to higher ground and started carpeting the cat room with blankets. We were terrified as I am sure many of the critters were. Fortunately, we all made it through none the worse for wear...besides being a little soggy. After making sure all the animals were safe my staff and I then had to hike through 6" deep mud to get to a main road to be picked up.
we took quite a hit. And here in Tucson it is just the start of monsoon season. The shelter is going to need major restoration inside and out. We have to replace our roof, open up the walls where the water rose and make sure we don't sustain mold and so much more. Our fencing and outdoor kennels were also destroyed. We don't know what the insurance will cover as we don't have flood insurance. So, our utmost need is financial donations.
