The dropped him off on the side of the road – knowing that his chances of survival were slim. He was left in an area with particularly heavy traffic, and of course, poor Levi's luck quickly ran out. He was brutally struck by a car, which resulted in his left hind leg being completely torn away, and his right hind leg broken and mangled. Struggling hard to move before it could happen again – somehow – Levi managed to drag his little body out of immediate danger. But understandably, he could not get very far.
When he was found, this poor boy was quickly succumbing to his injuries. He had lost an extensive amount of blood and was in agonizing pain. Rescuers quickly rushed Levi to the emergency clinic, where doctors are working hard to lessen some of the trauma caused by humans. He was put on IV fluids, antibiotics, and painkillers before being was taken in for surgery, to amputate the mangled leg. But sadly, the complications didn't stop there.
The day after his surgery poor little Levi had "wind-up pain," which his vet explained was similar to the symptoms of having a phantom limb. Due to the constant extreme pain of his injuries and his expectation of pain although his leg was amputated. They did an amazing job of managing his pain and did their best to keep him as comfortable as possible, but unfortunately for this sweet boy, this first stage of recovery will be his most challenging. Medically speaking, however, Levi's amputation went much better than expected, with very little blood loss, but but the true extent of his medical needs goes far beyond this initial surgery. He still has some wounds that need to be addressed, so for now, he will be getting lots of attention, daily bandage changes, and love from both rescuers and his medical staff.
Humans have failed this poor boy time and time again, but he has suffered in ways many of us humans can never understand. But, because of individuals like those at Houston K-911, humans have also shown Levi that humans CAN be good. Now, Levi needs a village (and deserves one, too!). His medical expenses have skyrocketed, and it's only just the beginning. His vets reassured his rescuers that as a young dog, Levi has a very good prognosis, and because he is so young, his capacity to heal quickly is superb – Which is really all his rescuers could hope to hear!
Levi is showing rescuers that he WANTS to fight, and rescuers couldn't let him go one more second without feeling safe, warm, and loved. Please keep this resilient boy in your thoughts as he begins his recovery journey, and if you are able, please donate to Levi's on-going medical care or send him a "get-well" goodie off his wishlist below. Thank you for your kindness and support!

Levi's horrific injury did not happen on its own; instead, it was caused entirely by humans. From a very early age, this precious boy was told that he was not 'good enough.' His previous owners had decided that, at some point, this sweet 6-month-old puppy had served his purpose; that he was done being a part of their family.
