Worried, her owner took her to the vet. The 9-year-old Australian Shepherd didn’t look that sick, in fact, the doctor commented that she seemed to be well taken care of. But obviously dogs don't just bleed for no reason so during her exam, the diagnosis became clear. Kate was suffering from Pyometra, which is a severe, life-threatening uterine infection that occurs as a result of hormonal changes in the female's reproductive tract. Following the dog going into heat, the hormone progesterone remains elevated for up to two months and causes the lining of the uterus to thicken in preparation for pregnancy. This normally happens when an adult dog is unspayed, but thankfully isn’t very common.
Unfortunately, Pyometra is an emergency and requires surgery immediately, and due to the emergent nature, the surgery is expensive. The vet gently explained this to the owner who began to cry and explain she could not afford it. She tearfully asked the doctor to euthanize Kate so she would no longer be in pain.
But the team at the vet's office wanted to give Kate a chance, so they called upon rescuers at Saving With Soul Pet Rescue to see if they would take Kate in and pay for the surgery. Literally during the conversation, Kate's condition suddenly worsened, and the decision had to be made immediately. Saving with Soul said YES and the vet team went to work to try to save Kate's life.
Currently, rescuers are awaiting news about Kate, but they are hopeful that the Pyometra was caught in time and that Kate will recover fully. Once she is stabilized post-surgery, she will go to a medical foster who can care for her while she recuperates. The recovery will be slow, but if all goes well, she should be just fine!
We are asking, no begging, for donations to go toward the costly surgery. She is such a sweet and life-filled pup who desperately wants to get back to playing and frolicking. Even in her pain, you can see in the video and pictures what a sweet spirit she has.
With a small donation, you can ensure her quality of life only continues to go up from here. Please find it in your heart to lend her the compassion she needs. Thank you to every donor who has contributed to her cause!

Kate has been living a rather normal life of a dog, with a loving owner. But one morning her owner saw blood underneath her bottom and realized she just wasn't acting like herself.
