This poor, forlorn boy had been surviving (barely) on the streets for an entire month—taking shelter underneath fallen debris in a junkyard property. Finally, some Good Samaritans saw Anakin and decided to take life-saving action. They made the call to those of Vegas Pet Rescue Project, who immediately stepped up for the task.
When they got to him, however, they were stunned. Stunned at both the heartbreaking amount of horrors Anakin has faced, but also due to the fact that they kind of, sort of, thought they recognized him…?!
But this was a shell of the dog rescuers of VPRP were thinking of. The dog they were thinking of was adopted from a local shelter, The Animal Foundation, back in October of 2021. Standing in front of them, however, was a completely emaciated, skin-and-bones, broken-down dog—accompanied by a mysteriously swollen belly.
After safely getting Anakin out of the junkyard, his rescuers rushed him to Spencer Springs Animal Hospital where doctors placed him in "critical care." They immediately hooked him up to IV fluids before getting him into X-Rays to find out what was in his poor tummy – as he was also incredibly anemic and suffering chronic diarrhea. But as it turns out, in his efforts to ease his hunger pains, poor Anakin had ingested three big rocks and a bunch of small pebbles lodged in his stomach.
To see a dog in this condition and do nothing is is utterly and wholly unacceptable. But to actively play a part in helping him get this way—to THIS level of "critical?" THAT is downright inhumane. Thankfully, in the state of Nevada, what happened to Anakin constitutes a punishable crime; and thankfully, now Anakin has some pretty darn incredible people on his side.
He is now on Day #7 of round-the-clock care at the hospital. Thankfully, things are FINALLY looking up; most of the rocks have moved from intestines into Anakin's colon and he was stable enough to be transferred to VECC to continue his critical care. However, due to the severity of his condition, Anakin will need to remain at the animal hospital for the time being. In addition to a slew of medications, this sweetheart is so, SO underweight, and needs frequent feedings every few hours. The hope is that he continues to pass the remaining debris and that nothing gets obstructed, because that would require immediate surgery, and this poor guy's already been through enough.
Please send Anakin lots of love and snuggles as he continues his recovery, and if you are able, please consider making a small donation towards his medical care. We will update everyone as soon as more is known, thank you for your kindness and support!
