how this poor baby's face got to be like this remains a mystery. What IS known is that Adonis' head had swelled up to the size of a watermelon and that upon his rescue he was fighting to breathe. We got him transported to our vet partners at Warm Hearts Pet Hospital, where he was immediately hooked up to IV fluids and pain medication before undergoing his first set of X-Rays. (*Thankfully, nothing was seen on the scans, but it would be hard to when he is so emaciated). There are multiple areas around Adonis' face that are open and infected—from which continuous, steady streams of blood and pus are draining.
Doctors' original suspicion was lymphoma cancer—and an advanced form of it, too. But we just received a sliver of HOPE, coming in the form of Adonis' initial bloodwork and test results. His bloodwork revealed a very high WBC count, which could be a result of his infection OR may indicate a possible allergic reaction. Either way, we decided that we are choosing HOPE. We are choosing to pray that this is, in fact, either an abscess or allergic reaction (*versus cancer). And we are choosing to fight for Adonis.
Currently, this brave boy is oxygenating well and has no fever. Doctors believe Adonis is around 5 years old; however, he is not chipped or neutered so sadly we do not know who to hold accountable just yet...but best believe we're going to keep trying. They've also started Adonis on Prednisone and an Antihistamine to treat his possible allergic reaction—and in even MORE good news, they told us that he even ate dinner last night AND breakfast this morning!!
Adonis will be hospitalized at Warm Hearts Pet Hospital for the next few days (*minimum), under 24/7 intensive care on IV fluids, heavy pain medicine, and antibiotics. He is still incredibly weak; and though he is currently stable, his prognosis remains extremely guarded. But in the face of all of this, Adonis is fighting HARD to get his chance—and it's a chance that he wholly and undoubtedly deserves.
So while the jury's still out on how he got to be this way, we are going to make d*mn sure this never happens to Adonis again. As long as he is fighting, we'll be fighting—each and every step of the way. Adonis is getting - and will continue to get - all of the supportive care needed to beat this, if this is in fact beatable. In the meantime, this brave boy is going to need all the help he can get. Welcome, Adonis. You're part of the VPRP pack, now. Your best life starts TODAY. 💙

URGENT: We received an urgent message regarding a seemingly-dumped dog wandering the streets of Las Vegas, Nevada, with the flesh torn from his face. Needless to say, we were mortified; but above all, we were heartbroken.
In addition to being severely emaciated, whatever's going on with Adonis' noggin is severe; and now that he's with us, we're getting our first real glimpses of what he's up against. But at the moment, just how this poor baby's face got to be like this remains a mystery. What IS known is that Adonis' head had swelled up to the size of a watermelon and that upon his rescue he was fighting to breathe.
