Clementine is a sweet Corgi up who was surrendered by a backyard breeder, with no vaccines or vet care. This girl was full of parasites and has been receiving care and thriving in a foster home until earlier this week. Our sweet corgi puppy Clementine was hospitalized yesterday after being exposed to parvo and showing symptoms of lethargy, vomiting and bloody diarrhea. Just two weeks prior, Clementine received her last set of vaccines, was spayed and had a clean fecal test. She was set to begin her search for her forever family when she suddenly stopped eating. This is not the norm for a pup like Clementine who has a very healthy appetite. We knew something was wrong and acted quickly.
Rescue is tough. We pour so much love into our dogs that it’s soul-crushing when things don’t go as planned. This week was especially hard with 9 puppies exposed to parvo. Sadly, we lost 3 babies this week, despite early treatment and hospitalization. Clementine is fully vaccinated and her prognosis is good, but we will be on pins and needles until she is home. It’s so heartbreaking to see her go through this after such a rough beginning.
We took her to our vet for a parvo test and it came back positive. She was admitted to the clinic for hospitalization with an aggressive plan for supportive care, despite the fact that she was still lively, playful, and happy. Clementine was immediately started on IV fluids, nausea medication, and antibiotics to give her the best fighting chance of survival. This morning, she had a big blowout of bloody diarrhea and was pretty lethargic afterward. Our poor girl took a turn for the worst. The vet did another fecal and determined that she also had coccidia, a parasite with symptoms very similar to parvo. Additional medications were added and she started to improve immediately. Clementine remains hospitalized and we are hoping that she will be feeling much better soon. We just want to bring this sweet girl home, so she can finally be adopted and have the wonderful life she deserves.
Clementine is fighting hard! She improved after coccidia treatment. Thankfully, the cocktail of nausea meds is working and our girl has stopped vomiting, which is a huge win during parvo treatment. She also has not had diarrhea in the last 12 hours but still isn’t eating on her own. At the moment, Clementine is still on IV fluids to stay hydrated. She is receiving dextrose to keep her blood sugar up and an appetite stimulation was added this afternoon, in hopes that she will eat.
Clementine LOVES food but is even refusing her favorites, cheese, and rotisserie chicken, at the moment. Otherwise, she’s alert and gives her famous corgi head tilts if you say her name. Our volunteer who transported her to the new hospital even got a little tail wag earlier!
We have spent close to $4,000 on hospitalization and treatment for Clementine, and she still needs additional care. We have only raised a fraction of the cost of her medical care and simply can’t continue to treatment without fundraising. We are overwhelmed with medical cases at the moment, and need your help to give Clementine the chance she deserves! Thank you so much for your support!
