Urgent: Pup is in Critical Condition after severe neglect, the next few days will be crucial for his recovery.
No animal should be left to wither away from starvation– left to drink amongst the dirty pools of gutter water while his neglectful owner drove swiftly away. But this is exactly what happened to poor Meatball, cowering on the pavement almost too weak to move as he gazed up with heartache in his eyes.
While our hearts are still healing from Spaghetti's passing, rescuers from Near & Far Animal Foundation got another critical call of a sweet pitty mix that was extraordinarily emaciated and balancing on the brink of death. Meatball happened to wander up on a kindhearted local's porch looking for any shelter. When the residents of the house opened the door, they were utterly shocked to see this ghastly silhouette of a once healthy pup. The locals hurried to get Meatball help as soon as possible, as his situation was becoming more dire by the moment. With a bit of networking, they were able to contact dedicated rescuers in Staten Island at Near & Far Foundation. And although his future may look grim right now, rescuers could not leave him to suffer. They are committed to saving Meatballs and there was no way they'd allow him to be sent to a shelter. They immediately sprang into action and rushed to this poor pup's aid.
When they arrived on the scene, they found Meatball– emaciated, weak, and frightened of humans. Their hearts broke as they looked at his fragile, weak body and wondered, “How could anyone be so cruel?”. The NAFAF crew quickly rushed this precious pup to the emergency vet. All were heartbroken to see just how much Meatball suffered, they only hoped they can help soothe his pain. In critical condition, Vets rushed Meatball back to the examination room where they began to try and stabilize him.
Vets discovered Meatball had low levels of protein in his blood, was extremely dehydrated and was horribly malnourished to the point his skin was stretched thin over his delicate, but piercing bones. Low levels of protein are often signs of a worm infestation in dogs' stomachs. They immediately began treatment, to stop any spread of infection and have him on continual fluids. Unfortunately, we will not know the extent of this sweet pup's injuries until he is strong enough to endure additional testing. Meatball will remain in the hospital until vets feel it is safe for him to be in the care of a medical foster.
Thankfully he is safe in the arms of vets and is being continually monitored. We are Meatball now has a second chance at life, and rescuers will keep us updated on his progress over the coming days.
