After thousands of days of waiting, Bandera, Barkley, and Nixie finally know what it feels like to leave the shelter behind. These three dogs spent years, and in some cases nearly their whole lives, hoping someone would say yes. When loving families in Canada finally did, only one thing stood in the way: the cost of getting them there. Thanks to you, that is no longer a barrier, and their long wait is finally over.

Bandera arrived at our shelter in Lebanon as a 2-month-old puppy and grew into a senior there, spending 4,208 days waiting for a home of his own. Barkley, found as a stray, had spent 3,943 days with us by the time he was nearly 14, the quiet, gray-muzzled kind of dog who had more than earned the right to rest. And Nixie, at just 6 years old, had already survived being shot and hit by a car before spending over 3 years in our care. Through it all, she stayed gentle and sweet, the kind of dog who just wants to be near you, and she still got along beautifully with other dogs. All three had families ready and waiting for them in Canada. They just needed a way to get there.

That's when you stepped in. Your generosity fully covered their Freedom Flights, and we were able to begin arranging travel with an incredible volunteer who agreed to fly all the way from Canada to Lebanon and back again to escort them safely. Because airlines limit how many dogs can travel at once, we waited for a confirmed date, and soon it was official: Bandera, Barkley, and Nixie would leave Lebanon on August 24th. Before they departed, Bandera and Barkley had dental work done to make sure they were as healthy as possible for the journey ahead. It was the final step before they could finally go home.

On travel day, all three were secured in their crates and on their way. They landed in Montreal and spent their first night in Canada with the same volunteer who had flown alongside them, and in the most beautiful twist of all, that volunteer is adopting Bandera. After nearly 12 years of waiting, Bandera went home with the person who carried him across the world. Barkley and Nixie were set to head to their own families within days, and all three spent that time decompressing and soaking up the one-on-one attention they had gone without for so long.

Since then, Bandera and Nixie have checked in from their new homes, and they could not look happier or more comfortable with the families who chose them. After everything they have been through, these dogs finally have soft beds, quiet homes, and people who will never let them go.

To every single person who donated, shared their story, or simply took a moment to care about three senior dogs waiting an ocean away: thank you. You are the reason Bandera gets the quiet retirement he earned, the reason Barkley gets to spend his golden years in a real home, and the reason Nixie finally knows what it means to be safe and loved. From all of us, and from Bandera, Barkley, and Nixie, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
