Placed in a cardboard box without food or water and left on the sidewalk in the Arizona heat, poor Cocoa was found abandoned with her mom and two brothers.
All three kittens suffered from upper respiratory infections along with secondary eye infections, but little Cocoa's condition was clearly much more severe. She suffers from a rare congenital birth defect called bilateral tarsal arthrogryposis, which means that her hind legs are backwards and crisscrossed at the ankle joint. Cocoa has some mobility in her back legs, but “walking” on her ankle bones is painful and causes fluid build-up resulting in swelling and even more pain.
In order to make Cocoa more comfortable and help alleviate her pain, her foster mom, Jodi Polanski, who also happens to be the founder and executive director of Lost Our Home Pet Rescue, created a patchwork of padding throughout her home. “Blankets, yoga mats, carpet padding, Cocoa gravitates towards these cushy alternatives rather than walking on the hard surface of the tile floors.” While this is helpful for Cocoa's short-term comfort, the long-term solution for this kitten is surgery.
The veterinarians at Midwestern University determined that Cocoa's condition could be improved with bilateral tarsal arthrodesis surgery. She will never have mobility in her ankle joint, but this will enable her to walk on the pads of her feet like a normal cat. At just four months old, Cocoa is still growing, so she will not be a candidate for surgery until she is between six and nine months of age, which gives us the time we need to raise the funds to pay for this expensive procedure.
Thanks to a generous donor, we are already half way there. The total cost of the surgeries for both legs is estimated to be about $6,000 and that includes the 30% discount that Midwestern University provides to nonprofits. Luckily, we have a donor who will match contributions up to $3,000! With your help, we can get Cocoa the life-changing surgery that she needs to relieve her pain and discomfort and give her the best chance at a healthy and happy life! Will you help create a brighter tomorrow for this sweet kitten?
To support this angel please donate to her care or purchase items from her wishlist to raise her spirits and keep her comfortable until her surgery.
