This Great Dane family has already suffered two great losses and needs your help to make sure they do not experience any more.
Elsa came into the Apple Valley Animal Shelter as an owner surrender. When Elsa was surrendered, nobody was informed that she was pregnant. A couple days into her stay at the shelter, she gave birth to 9 baby Danes - 2 boys and 7 girls. Live Love Animal Rescue stepped up and got Elsa and her 9 babies out of there when they were 3 days old. When the family arrived at the foster home, they were in pretty rough shape, including Mom. The first night was tough as well, with one of the pups not making it through the night. In the morning, the foster also noticed the runt wasn't doing so well. Needless to say, they loaded the Dane family in the car and headed straight to the vet. When they arrived at the vet, the runt Merida was taken back right away. Her glucose levels were at 0 and temp was at 92, meaning it was critical to warm her up and get some milk in her. Elsa also was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection but was suggested not to be put on any meds because she was nursing. It was then decided Merida would need to be bottle fed and separated from her pack if she had any chance to survive. Merida was taken home for round the clock care, but the next morning, she took a turn for the worse again. After returning to the vet, Merida sadly ended up not making it though she put up a strong fight.
Currently, the 2 boys and 5 girls and Mama Elsa are doing great over at their foster's home. Elsa is steadily gaining weight, recovering from her URI, and taking care of her puppies. The rescue is closely monitoring the puppies to ensure everyone stays healthy and on track!
