When Jolene first came to us, we had no idea she was in such critical condition. She was emaciated and pale and cold, yes, but her foot was wrapped up in a makeshift bandage that hid her injuries from us at first. Then, when we got closer to her and held her, the smell hit us. The smell of death, of rotting flesh. We pulled back the bandage and rushed Jolene to the ER moments later when we found that the entire bottom of her foot was gone. Just..gone. There was no telling how damage like this happened but when our vets started to assess her wounds, they advised us that it couldn't have been anything less than severely traumatic. It was determined that each of her toes was missing except for one, but with a slight tug of the vet's fingers, the last toe fell off.
Seeing Jolene in this condition was heartbreaking, and all we wanted to know was who was responsible for allowing this baby to suffer like this. All the while, Jolene just looked up at everyone with nothing less than complete love and trust, further proving that we humans don’t deserve these precious animals. Fortunately, Jolene is in the safe hands of our rescue, where she will never have to know this kind of suffering again.
That said, Jolene has since been cleaned up, given antibiotics and pain medications, and had her foot wrapped back up correctly. With the condition of her paw, she will need an amputation, which has been scheduled for the first available spot on Wednesday morning. We will all have difficulty breathing as we wait to see if her little body is strong enough to withstand the surgery to remove her leg. But, with a spreading infection that will kill her if it is not done, we know this is a necessary evil. Fortunately, Jolene is eating and drinking well and sleeping a TON, so her little 11-pound body should be about 25-30 pounds at 5 months old.
We will keep you all updated on her progress, but until then, we ask that you please kindly consider donating to her ongoing care and medical treatments. Any amount will help make the biggest difference as we work round the clock to save her life. You can also send her a gift from the wishlist to help lift her spirits as she heals. Thank you in advance for your kindness and generosity!

The repulsive smell of dying flesh filled the room as the vet pulled back the bandage that covered up this little puppy's foot, exposing a mangled mess of blood and bone that was turning more and more septic by the moment.
