The vets stated that they would be shocked if little Swiss made it through the night. This small and fragile newborn’s body and been ripped apart, from what we aren’t sure. Where cozy fur once was, there were now maggots and blood. An infection had started to set in, and Swiss was becoming weaker by the minute.
A Good Samaritan came across the pup who was completely alone, his white fur stained with blood. The closer they got, the more their concern grew as they saw the large, open wound on his backside. He had been a victim of “flystrike” which is when flies lay their eggs on animals and they hatch into maggots. This is extremely painful as the maggots begin to eat this puppy alive.
It felt as if we couldn’t get him to the vet fast enough. They immediately brought him in and started caring for his wounds. They removed the maggots and cleaned the open and infected area. He will need to have his injuries tended to for the foreseeable future, and because he is so young, he will also need to be bottle-fed until he transitions to gruel food.
Like we said above, we really weren’t expecting him to make it through the night. We had no idea how long he had been in this condition, or when the last time he had a meal. We didn’t think his system would be able to fight off the infection- but he did!
Thankfully, Swiss made it through the night and is doing wonderful so far with his foster mom! He is on pain meds and receiving hydrotherapy for his wounds.
Medical cases quickly drain resources that are already low; please consider donating for Swiss so we can keep saving medical cases like him. We are counting on animal lovers like you to come to the rescue!
