Sweet Potato has suffered greatly in excruciating pain from repetitive urinary obstructions. We have no idea how many obstructions Potato was forced to endure in his life, but his pain and suffering ends now.
Poor Potato was in agony due to a painful blockage in his urinary tract. Urinary obstructions are quite common in male cats due to the structure of their anatomy, and typically resolve themselves within a few days. Potato, however, was suffering from recurring blockages, and his case was so severe that there was blood in his urine. This condition can become life threatening if a complete blockage of the urinary tract occurs and no urine can exit the body, so we knew Potato needed immediate aid. Upon intake, Potato received emergency surgery to remove an existing urinary obstruction, but Potato continued to become blocked up, so the vet recommended a perineal urethrostomy surgery procedure to prevent further occlusions.
A perineal urethrostomy removes the narrowest part of the urethra, the tube through which urine exits the body from the bladder. This improves the ability to urinate and lowers the risk of future obstructions. Potato underwent the perineal urethrostomy, and the surgery was successful. It was discovered that urinary crystals were the cause of Potato’s obstruction. Urinary crystals are typically harmless, but because Potato’s urethra was so narrow, the crystals were building up and creating a blockage. This problem was resolved thanks to the perineal urethrostomy.
Potato is now recovering from his surgery and is doing much better! Once he has healed completely, Potato will no longer experience pain while urinating, and his chances of developing another obstruction are extremely low.
