On March 24th we noticed something was not right with Rufus. His face was swollen and he was struggling to breathe. We got our amazing vet on the phone right away. We initially thought allergies and so we gave him some Benadryl and waited. Unfortunatley, nothing improved. We took him to the vet right away who looked him over and said we were dealing with something more serious. We got initial x-rays and found that air was getting into his muscle tissue and we were probably dealing with an internal injury of some sort, likely and esophageal tear but we had no idea how serious this was. We then rushed Rufus to Purdue Emergency vet clinic and they took him back right away.
Rufus had to stay overnight at Purdue for close monitoring, more x-rays and bloodwork. He will be seeing an internal specialist in the morning to assess the damage and determine a plan. Right now, we are just waiting, but the vet bills at Belladonna are climbing. Rufus' Vet bill is estimated at $4,000 right now. But he is a young pup with so much life and love left to give and we want to give him the best chance to fully live his life here at Belladonna! He has only been here for 2 months and he is just getting started on his puppy shenanigans.
Any donations not only helps Rufus, but allows us to continue helping more animals and consider additional rescues at Belladonna. I'm going to be honest, fiancial barriers and major vet bills like this are the main reason we have to turn down animals who need us. The more we can fundraise and get these expenses covered, the more we are able to reach out and help other animals in need too!

Rufus was an owner surrender that came to live at Belladonna Mid-January 2023. He quickly worked his way into everyone's hearts and has easily become a favorite resident here! He is a playful and loving pup who wants nothing more than to give hugs and cuddle up with friends.
