Silver Paws & Silver Hearts is an innovative program that we created to help both our senior animals and senior community members. We know that finding homes for senior pets can be a more challenging placement because they may have less tine with us - a daunting prospect to some. We also know as we get older, animals can provide valuable support and comfort, but what if something happens to us? Our Silver Hearts & Silver Paws program resolves BOTH of those issues at one time. Senior pets often NEED a stable, fairly quiet environment. Senior humans often have that.

Silver Paws refers to any of our foster program pets that are age 7+, or sometimes younger if they are a hospice case.

Silver Hearts are any human age 55+ that is not able to financially commit to the responsibility of caring for a senior pet, but is willing to provide a safe and loving home for a Silver Paw.

We match our Silver Paws and Silver Hearts together and provide ALL foster supplies and veterinary care needed to ensure both can watch over the other. This is a permanent foster placement that allows our senior friends to enjoy each other's company with the support they need.

In May of 2021, SPCHS received a request to help Gemma and her feline sisters, Oola and Roka, after their human died. All wereabout 12 years old, waaaaay back then. It took until December 2021 to place them with a permanent foster pet parent through our 'Silver Paws/Silver Hearts' program.

Between February 2021 (their owner was very ill with cancerprior to passing away) and December 2021, these Furkids hadbeen alone in their home for months with just a single daily visit from a family friend. Now they are getting all the attention they deserve, as Silver Paws!

Gemma the Schnauzer was so matted and filthy that it tookseveral baths and a good haircut to find the real beautyunderneath. Gemma seems to hear so much better now and alsodespite her eye issues, without all the matted fur, can focusbetter toward sounds.

After 10 months as Silver Paws, they have received much needed routine veterinary care and are thriving. Gemma seems to hear so much better now and alsodespite her eye issues, without all the matted fur, can focus better towards sounds. Gemma’s feline brother and sister fared losing their first mommy a whole lot better and have adapted to their new home well! 😸

It is an honor to help animalsespecially those in dire need like these. This is just one of many and so many more to come.

We are so grateful for the support recieved from donors over the last few days to help our special seniors! These are some of the most special people and animals and we love when others recognize just how important these relationships can be.

We still have a ways to go though to meet our goal for the month, which allows us to support our Silvers and connect even more of them. Right now, we need about 400 more pounds of food donated, a goal we can meet easily if every single person donates one of the bags of food we have marked as most needed.

Just one bag of food and you can help us make sure a senior pet doesn't have to stay in a shelter and a senior citizen doesn't have to feel alone. If you can manage it, please help us reach our goal today.
