Cat Left For Dead On The Side Of The Road With A Broken Face Is Now Adored By An Entire Veterinary T

Kayn once lay nearly lifeless on the side of the road, blind, bleeding, and broken, while cars passed him by for more than two hours. Today, he is purring, making biscuits, and soaking up the love of a family who could not imagine life without him. He has been adopted by the team at West Lafayette Veterinary Care, the very people who know best how much he has overcome, and he is surrounded by care and affection every single day. This is the story of how you helped save him.

On March 27th, a social media post appeared about a cat lying on the side of the road. Kayn had been hit by a car and left there, gravely injured, with devastating trauma to his face and head. Our founder rushed to find him and got him to the hospital as quickly as possible. His jaw was broken, and the force of the impact had pushed blood behind his eyes, leaving him blind. He was swollen, bleeding from his eyes, nose, and mouth, in shock, and neurologically unstable. As veterinarians worked to stabilize him, they discovered something even more heartbreaking: Kayn had likely been surviving on his own for weeks before the accident, slowly starving. He was severely malnourished and so dangerously anemic that his care team feared for his life.

The next day, Kayn was transferred to our veterinary team, where he was kept on IV support, pain medication, antibiotics, and steroids. Once his swelling began to subside, he went under anesthesia for X-rays, placement of a feeding tube, and wiring of his fractured jaw. The news was serious. Kayn had suffered multiple head fractures, and his prognosis remained guarded. Still, he tolerated his very first tube feeding beautifully, and his swelling continued to go down. He seemed a little down at first, so his care team spent extra time loving on him and keeping his spirits up.

Slowly, Kayn began to come back to life. His anemia stabilized, his bloodwork improved, and his energy started to return. He found his purr again, became a dedicated biscuit maker, and discovered a deep love for being brushed. His heart rate remained abnormally slow, and his care team kept a close eye on it as they waited for him to grow stronger. Within a couple of weeks, he was giving head boops and even climbed halfway into a tech’s lap during a feeding, a huge emotional milestone for a cat who had been through so much. Soon after, he started lapping up soupy food on his own.

His road was still long and fragile. Kayn had his painful mats shaved away, and his care team began walking him around the clinic under supervision to rebuild his strength and confidence. He had an abscess on his shoulder that ruptured and had to be fully cleaned out, and his anemia returned for a time and needed close monitoring. Thankfully, an ultrasound showed that his kidneys were okay. His malnutrition was so severe that he was still just 5.1 pounds when he should have been closer to 11 to 13. But there was hope in his eyes, literally. His right eye began detecting shadows, and you could finally see a bit of his eye color again.

Through all of it, Kayn’s sweetness never faded. He purred freely, kneaded happily, and started meowing whenever he heard a familiar voice. He bonded deeply with his care team and lit up every time they were near. Then came the news we had been hoping for: Kayn was eating great, he had started gaining weight, and he was cleared to have his feeding tube removed. Even better, his care team determined he would not need another procedure to remove his jaw wiring, a huge relief since he had not done well under anesthesia.

Kayn had captured so many hearts at West Lafayette Veterinary Care that they simply could not let him go. Just in time for Mother’s Day, they officially adopted him. He has since been diagnosed with a heart murmur and a highly suspected case of lymphoma in his left eye, and he will need ongoing care. There is no better place for him than with a family who also happens to be a veterinary team, ready to cherish him, monitor him closely, and love him through whatever comes next.

To every single person who donated, shared, and believed in Kayn: thank you. Because of you, his medical bills were kept up with throughout his long hospital stay, and his remaining balance is expected to be covered in full. Because of you, a cat who was left to suffer alone on the side of the road now knows comfort, safety, and the love of a family. And because of you, we are now able to step up for another medical kitty in need. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. This community of CUDDLY donors is truly extraordinary, and none of this would have been possible without you.
