Clover

Clover's journey with us began in May of 2022 when we received a 911 call about a small Pit Bull girl who came into the shelter severely wounded and covered in green paint. Immediately, a tentative plan for Clover's care was made and we rushed to get her to the nearest vet. As soon as we saw Clover, we were completely dumbfounded. How could someone commit such disgusting acts of cruelty against this innocent dog?

Clover's abusers made her suffer through intense physical pain, causing deep wounds and lacerations and covering her battered body with green paint. Clover had no idea why she was being treated this way, and she suffered mentally as a result of the abuse.  Thankfully, Clover was safe with us and was brought to North Valley Veterinary Center where she received the absolute best care and was showered with love. We knew her journey would be long and hard but we could tell she was such a resilient girl with so much life in her.

It took several medicated baths to remove the green paint, but the vet staff was finally able to get Clover clean enough to treat her wounds. Once the paint was gone it was clear how severe her injuries were. This poor girl had chemical burns over a large portion of her body. Clover also had infections in her eyes and ears that needed to be addressed. While Clover was receiving life-saving care, we did our best to figure out who did this to her. We even offered a $2,000 reward for information about Clover's abuse.

Clover's body was healing well, but her mind was very shut down after everything she has gone through. She spent a great deal of time in the manager's office while she was hospitalized at the vet so she could receive extra love and affection. We are so grateful to them for giving Clover the VIP treatment. Eventually, the vet staff began to practice gentle touch with Clover to help her get desensitized to physical contact.

By June 2022, Clover was cleared to be released from the hospital. Her wounds still had not fully healed, but we were so proud of the progress Clover had made. This sweet girl was finally beginning to experience the joys of life, like going on adventurous hikes and curling up in a warm blanket at the end of a long day. Clover had turned into a sweet, happy little girl who loves playing with her foster friends, going for hikes, and snuggling in her bed.

We felt Clover was ready for adoption, and began to look for her forever home. This happy pup’s goofy side was starting to come out! She did an amazing job with housetraining, and we were overjoyed to see how far this little 30-lb girl had come. All that was left was to find Clover the fairytale ending she deserved. We spent months waiting for a loving family to come along and take Clover home.

In September of 2022, we thought we had finally found the right match. Clover went home with a family for a foster-to-adopt trial, but she began exhibiting some fear-based behaviors that we wanted to help her work on before we finalized the adoption. Fear-based behavior can quickly become aggression, and she didn't want Clover to wind up back in a shelter or be euthanized because we pushed her too far before she was ready.

Unfortunately, the family decided to go with another dog while Clover was in training. We were so proud of the progress that Clover had made, but by April of 2023, Clover still didn't have her happy ending. She had been adopted a few months prior but was returned to us because the family was unable to provide her with the structure and support that she needed.

While she was waiting for her forever home, Clover blew out her ACL and tore her meniscus. She underwent surgery on one knee and was taking some time to recover before her second surgery a few months later to repair her other knee. Clover spent the majority of her time recuperating in the quiet care of a foster home where she got plenty of rest to allow her body to heal.

Finally, after just over a year in our care, Clover is home. Despite the emotional and physical torment and abuse she endured, Clover was able to overcome every hurdle and has found a loving family that will support her as she continues to regain her confidence and trust in humans. Clover's adoptive parents are some of the most sensitive and thoughtful people we have ever had the pleasure of knowing. We could not be happier, and we know that Clover is in excellent hands.

This incredible dog has finally found her place in the world.
