Our paths crossed with Betania's on a busy, high-traffic street, where the poor girl lay injured and alone after being hit by a speeding vehicle. This small canine had battled life's odds to survive but the accident left her immobile, vulnerable, and in severe pain. Rushing her to the emergency animal clinic, we discovered the severity of her injuries: a severely swollen head, an immobile eye, and blood trickling from her nose.
Doctors' grim diagnosis further intensified our worry. Betania had suffered severe head trauma along with significant fractures to her jaw, and sadly, her wounds were already infected, with the surrounding skin turning necrotic. And to add to the challenges, she was diagnosed with Pyometra, a rapidly growing infection in her uterus.
Undaunted by the uphill journey, we started on immediate critical care for Betania—with our brave girl undergoing two successful surgeries to treat the Pyometra and repair her fractured jaw. And despite her body's weakened state, she held on to life fiercely throughout it all.
The neurologist and surgeon continued to monitor her closely, preparing for a third surgery aimed at fixing the lesion in her left brainstem, which had caused paralysis on one side and decreased mobility on the other. Meanwhile, we administered lubricated drops for her paralyzed eye, hoping this treatment would restore her vision.
On April 30th, our brave girl was still fighting hard. Despite low-grade fevers and neurological damage, Betania showed signs of progress. She had started walking, going to the bathroom on her own, and her appetite had improved significantly.
By May 24th, Betania's recovery had progressed smoothly. Her fevers had subsided, and she had healed remarkably well from both surgeries. The neurologist determined that operating on Betania's brainstem was not necessary, sparing her from a third surgery. With this, Betania was set to be discharged on May 27th and placed in a loving foster home.
On May 26th, Betania was officially discharged from the hospital. Her journey from fighting for life to getting ready for a forever home was an extraordinary testament to her indomitable spirit. As she waited for adoption in her loving foster home, we continued to share updates on her progress, hoping that the perfect family would notice her.
On June 4th, our prayers were answered. Betania was adopted! The same couple who had previously adopted another rescue, Diogo, fell in love with our brave girl. Betania was now part of a loving family, sharing her home with her new brother Diogo and two other dog siblings.
From a traffic casualty to a treasured family member, Betania has truly lived her second chance at life, and we couldn't be more grateful to everyone who helped make this possible. Thank you, CUDDLY Family, from the bottom of our hearts. We could not do ANY of this without you. ❤️🙏
