Betty

We were alerted back in May to a heartbreaking case involving a female bulldog that was found practically lifeless in the scorching 91°F heat. We instantly knew this poor girl had survived an unimaginable trauma, and we could not turn a blind eye to this poor dog's suffering. Betty needed us, and she needed us fast.

In addition to being malnourished and dangerously dehydrated, her body was peppered with deep, maggot-infested wounds. To add insult to injury, this poor girl's vision was seriously impaired thanks to a severe case of untreated Cherry Eye. However, the kind strangers who came upon Betty moved her into the shade while they waited with her for help to arrive. Without their intervention, she likely would not have survived another day.

Once in our care, Betty spent the next several weeks not just surviving - but fighting. The brilliant team at Oaks Vet Care tended diligently to her every need. Her wounds were being meticulously cleaned and re-bandaged, and all of the invasive foxtails were removed from her eyes and private areas. Though our funds were extremely limited, we couldn’t stand the thought of Betty being denied her chance to live.

Words could not describe our gratitude for the outpouring of support we received for sweet Betty. She continued to thrive and has been basking in the love and care showered upon her. However, we learned several weeks after beginning her treatment that Betty would require surgery to remove her eye. The Cherry Eye had gone untreated for too long and caused irreparable damage.

While we worked to get Betty's surgery scheduled, she continued to transform from a scared and severely injured pup on the brink of death into the sweetest and goofiest girl we have ever known. In these challenging times, Betty served as a powerful reminder of why we continue our mission. She was even able to enjoy a weekend outing to Idyllwild, embracing every moment of joy.

Finally, we were able to get Betty into surgery, and she had her painful, ulcerated eyeball removed. During this operation, she was also spayed and had a cyst between two of her toes removed. Betty underwent all three necessary procedures with great success. Betty demonstrated incredible resilience throughout the surgeries, proving herself to be a true champion.

Betty was feeling so much better, and it seemed like the only thing left to do was find this sweet girl a loving home. Shortly after Betty was cleared for adoption, we were connected with a woman ready to open her heart and home to our girl. After meeting Amanda, we knew right away that she would be a perfect match for Betty, and the two of them are now living happily ever after!
