Reese

Once a victim of unimaginable abuse, Reese was on the brink of euthanasia. Her transformation from a severely injured bait puppy to a healthy, joyful dog will truly warm your heart. Read on to learn more about her remarkable story!

Reese’s journey to recovery began on April 23rd when she was brought to Memphis Animal Services. Found as a stray puppy in a heartbreaking state, her injuries hinted at the possibility of her being a bait dog, used as merely a punching bag for ruthless, fighting dogs. She was discovered with a shattered jaw and deep puncture wounds drawn across her face and head. The pain she must have endured is unimaginable. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was on the brink of being euthanized but fortunately, we saved her just in time!

Once under our care, Reese immediately received treatment at Bluff City Veterinary Specialists in Memphis, TN. A CT scan revealed multiple fractures, including three mandibular fractures on her right side, fractures on the left side of her sinuses, hard palate, and eye orbit, alongside a complete degloving of her lower jaw. These injuries sadly confirmed our suspicion that she had been used as a “bait dog.” The mere thought of her troubling past pulls us to tears.

On April 24th, Reese underwent her first surgery aimed at stabilizing her bottom jaw fractures. The veterinary team utilized cerclage wire and suture to piece back her fragile bones. Despite the complexity of her injuries, the front of her bottom jaw could not be saved, and the remaining bone was carefully reconstructed to give her the most normal jaw possible.

Excitingly, Reese responded positively to the treatment! After the removal of non-viable bone, her initial fracture repair began to heal quite well, and she continued to thrive under the dedicated care of her foster mom. Gradually, she gained a healthy weight, and her sutures were successfully removed. Right before our eyes, she began to look like the happy and healthy pup she always had been deep inside!

By the end of her rehabilitative journey, Reese’s story reached a beautiful ending: she got adopted! Reese now enjoys life with her wonderful new family, running in a big, fenced yard with her new brother and sister, and bonding with her new animal friends on their farm. Thanks to you, Reese found her second chance at life, filled with joy and love. We are just amazed at her incredible progress and are so very grateful for all the love and support we received for this precious girl.
