Pandora and Persi

Pandora and Persi were found on the brink of death after they were dumped in the harsh Alabama sun. Severely underweight and suffering from an array of life-threatening health issues, they likely wouldn’t have made it another day out there all alone. But by some miracle, they were found, and through steadfast intervention and gentle care, these pups are now flourishing!

In the remote rural outskirts of Prichard, Alabama, Pandora and Persi trembled alone, seeking each other for safety and warmth. Having been neglected for likely their entire lives, they could barely stand against their debilitating weakness, every rib jutting from their frail frames. Discovered by Animal Control in the nick of time, the five-month-old puppies weighed a mere 8 pounds each—far below the healthy weight of 25 pounds appropriate for their age. Hurriedly, they were scooped up and brought to our doors, where our team awaited with open arms.

Pandora's condition was alarmingly critical; her stark white gums signaled severe anemia, and her body was devoid of muscle mass and energy. Her sister, Persi, was burdened with mange, an agonizing skin disease that caused her to lose all her hair and left her skin thickened, resembling that of an elephant, covered in open wounds and blisters. We cannot imagine her discomfort, trapped within a cage of her own skin.

Immediate medical intervention was crucial to save both of their lives. The moment they arrived at Paws Crossed, Pandora received urgent care to combat her anemia and was started on a regimen of high-nutrient food to restore her depleted strength. Persi's treatment began with a focused plan to manage her mange, soothe her irritated skin, and promote full healing. Both of these girls had a long way to go, but we were prepared to do anything possible to see them through this trying time.

In just two weeks, Pandora's transformation was evident—her weight increased to a robust 20 pounds, and her wiry, crusty coat had given way to soft, peach fuzz. Persi also showed remarkable improvement, her weight climbing to 18 pounds and her skin steadily healing, setting the stage for hair regrowth. We were beyond proud of the incredible progress they had made in such a short amount of time!

Fast forward to the present: both Pandora and Persi have reached healthy weights of around 25 pounds. They are hardly recognizable when compared to the struggling, sickly pups we had initially found. Pandora was lovingly adopted and is now living happily by the beach in Navarre! Persi, thriving with her foster family, awaits her forever home—a future filled with love and security. The beautiful journey of these puppies will truly tug on anyone’s heart, and it could not have been made possible without your support.
