Charlize

Charlize had been found wandering the streets with a punctured eye filled with squirming larvae. We knew that her healing journey would be difficult. Would it even be possible? But through time, hard work, and lots of love, Charlize transformed completely and is now living each and every day overwhelmed with joy!

We don’t know what happened to Charlize. Whether she was intentionally hurt or stumbled her way into a heartbreaking accident, the wound that marred her face was severe. Maggots had found their way into her lesion and began consuming her flesh, sending shockwaves of pain through her body. Her belly swelled, hinting at a pregnancy. We hurried Charlize into our care, heartbroken yet determined to turn her life around.

In addition to her eye injury, which threatened her vision, Charlize had signs of troubling inflammation, causing her discomfort and unease. Once at the vet, this was later confirmed as pyometra, which is a life-threatening uterine infection that causes the uterus to fill with pus and bacteria. This is what led to her swollen belly, ruling out the possibility of pregnancy. 

With expert veterinary care, Charlize underwent emergency surgery to address the pyometra. Post-surgery, the medical team worked continuously to clean and then stitch her wound. They provided crucial medications to ease her pain and curb the gnawing infection. Miraculously, thanks to timely efforts, her injured eye had been saved; she had healthy vision in both eyes!

The journey was far from simple, requiring round-the-clock monitoring, but it was all worth it to steer her life in the right direction. Days grew into weeks, and Charlize’s transformation amazed us all. Her wound healed to the point that it was hardly even noticeable she had endured something so traumatic. Her playful spirit began to bloom, and she began running and playing freely, like the happy dog she had always been.

Charlize journey then came full circle: she was lovingly adopted by a family who vows to always keep her safe. In every photo, she is visibly smiling, adorned in adorable little outfits. When we reflect on her photos from before, we can hardly believe that this is even the same dog. We are just so happy for her and can’t wait to see all that life has in store!
