We are thrilled to share that Peter Rabbit has been adopted! This deserving bunny has been through so much. He braved the wild on his own, battled illness, and now, he is on his way to a loving forever home. Read on to learn how his story unfolded!
As those of you who followed Peter Rabbit’s rescue and recovery know, he has not had the easiest life. He was one of six domesticated rabbits turned loose into the suburban wild. Peter Rabbit’s owner up and left, and instead of taking her rabbits with her—the living, feeling creatures that counted on her for their well-being—she dumped them out into her yard. It wasn’t long before her next-door neighbor grew irritated at the sight of the rabbits eating up his lawn and chewing on his house. But what else were these rabbits supposed to do?
Thankfully, a kind woman in the neighborhood kept an eye on the rabbits. She wanted to save them, but she simply didn’t have the resources to suddenly house six rabbits. Even more alarming, the neighbor threatened to shoot all the rabbits if they weren’t gone soon. The good Samaritan called every rescue and shelter in the area, and they all turned her down—except us. When we heard her desperate plea for help, we knew we were the right team for the job.
Of the six rabbits, our rescue took in Peter Rabbit and Cottontail. Our tireless volunteers leaped into action, putting their handiwork to use as they constructed a spacious, comfortable hutch for the rabbits to stay in. It finally looked like everything was going to be okay—until Peter Rabbit’s health took a turn for the worse. Our team noticed his ears had turned crusty and foul-smelling. We immediately booked a same-day vet appointment for both rabbits.
Turns out, Peter Rabbit had contracted ear mites after being left alone in the outdoors for so long. Our spirits were crushed. Bunnies are sensitive animals. As a result, ear infections can quickly lead to neurological issues and seizures. The vet staff carefully examined Peter Rabbit and Cottontail, and sent us home with an array of medications and a long list of care instructions.
It took plenty of time, love, and medicine, but Peter Rabbit and Cottontail were finally patched up. Peter Rabbit required eight drops of medicine in his ears daily, which was an interesting process. To properly administer the medication, we had to hold Peter Rabbit a certain way so that he didn’t kick or accidentally hurt himself in the process—and he was not a fan. Nevertheless, this brave bunny put up with all the poking and prodding, and his healing process took off. The crust on both ear canals slowly, surely began to disappear, leaving behind soft, healthy fur and delicate skin. By the time Peter Rabbit finished his pain medications, he was clearly feeling so much better.
Our team is so proud of these rabbits. They have faced neglect, threats of violence, and illness. But throughout everything, they never lost their sweetness or their spark. And finally, we get to see all of our hard work—and your generous support—pay off. Peter Rabbit joined his new family in his forever home. His wonderful adopters had attended one of our vendor fairs. As soon as they approached the bunny enclosure, Peter Rabbit hopped right over to greet them, excitedly sniffing at their outstretched palms. We knew right then and there that it was meant to be!
Peter Rabbit headed off to his new home with a ton of treats, a bucket of chew toys, a shiny new playpen, and a two-story rabbit condo. We couldn’t have asked for a better ending to Peter Rabbit’s rescue and recovery story. None of this joy would have been possible without your continued support and selfless donations. Your investment in Peter Rabbit’s recovery has allowed this bunny to find a place where he is safe and cherished. We can’t thank you enough.
