While driving down a road the owner of Road Dogs and Rescue saw men gathered around a dog who has been hit by a car. The dog was bleeding and obviously in pain so she offered to take the young puppy to the vet where she was stabilized. Unfortunately, Xrays showed that her right calcaneous (hock) had been shattered into pieces.
Since she was not wearing a collar or chipped, her information was posted on Lost and Found websites and local shelters, but no one claimed her. She was given the name Skyebird and Road Dogs began helping her in every way they could. She saw an orthopedic specialist and had a complicated surgery to try and salvage her leg.
Healing began after the surgery, but nothing was certain in her fragile state. There was a problem with the pins shifting after her first surgery. Skyebird was taken to a second specialist in San Diego who said that because her bones had been smashed, the chances of fixing it were not good. So, with a heavy heart it was decided that amputation would be the best option.
Skyebird bounced back immediately and today she is a happy girl who enjoys hikes! The joy she has brought to a little bulldog rescue is insurmountable and the family that claims her as their own will be very lucky.
