Sugar

From the moment Sugar was born, her body has fought against her. Unlike the rest of her litter, who were plump and energized, Sugar was fading away by the day. By the time she came into rescue, she weighed in at 6.5 pounds while the rest of her siblings were reaching 40 pounds.

Her owner attempted to do all that he could for her, but simply didn't have the resources to get to the root of her problems - which were clearly internal. She received all of the food in the world and this girl remained a living skeleton.

Rescuers from Compassion For Canines were quick to take her in and brought her to the hospital, where they learned that she had a heart murmur and that her glucose levels were SO high that they couldn't be read by the machine. She was born with congenital diabetes AND malabsorption. She was given her first dose of insulin to begin regulating her blood sugar. Sugar went into foster care as she was undergoing treatment and four weeks later; she was doing SO much better! She has gained weight, and even grown a little bit! Because her body was unable to absorb nutrients during her first few months of life, we suspect she will always be small, but that doesn't stop her! She was able to raise over $3000 for her care AND she was adopted! She is an incredibly sweet puppy who has overcome so much in her short life, and we are SO HAPPY for her!
