Zoey was adopted from Riverside Animal Shelter in 2013 as a puppy. Seven years after she was adopted and two days before Christmas this year, she was surrendered by owners to the same shelter to die after being, what was thought to be brutally mauled.
Shortly before her family abandoned her, their neighbors had reported a dog fight followed by howling and crying. Animal Control came and easily found Zoey because of her whines under a car nearby. She had been attacked, was bleeding out, and her ‘family' never even checked to see if she was okay. After being confronted about her wounds and how emaciated she was, her ‘family' was given two choices. They could take her to get medical help or surrender her. They surrendered her and she was hauled off to the same shelter they had originally adopted her from.
The attack was vicious. Her front right leg was snapped in half, shattered, toes were broken on her left foot, and she had bite wounds throughout her body. There were old bite wounds as well, suggesting this has happened multiple times before and the family did nothing for Zoey even then. California Weimaraner Education and Rescue stepped up to take care of Zoey, show her the love she deserves, and get her the treatment she so desperately needed no matter what the cost. They took her in on Christmas Eve and kept her comfortable with pain medication until a surgeon was available the Monday after Christmas. The surgeon had said that Zoey's broken leg was the worst he's ever seen. Fragmented bones inside necrotic infected tissue. The most heartbreaking revelation was that the fracture was much older than a week or even 2 weeks old!! This meant this poor girl suffered without her owners' care much longer than the fight the day before Christmas Eve.
However, since Zoey's horrific wound kept getting larger, rescuers found a relatively new treatment using "fish skin bandages". Even though this worked wonders in healing her wounds, unfortunately, she required a leg amputation as no amount of rest or medication could heal the bone. Zoey's vet also actually fell in love with her and even offered to foster her! It was basically love at first sight for these two. Zoey had a long, rocky road with lots of vet appointments and bandage changes, but she received the best possible care with lots of healing items from her wishlist because of her amazing CUDDLY supporters. Because of you all, Zoey's campaign raised almost $15,000 to go directly toward her extensive medical care! The good news doesn't even stop there because Zoey's caretaker, vet, savior, and her family have decided to make it official and welcome Zoey as a forever part of their family. They couldn't bear the thought of not having Zoey a part of their lives anymore, and they decided she is already home and going nowhere!
Thank you all for every donation, every thought, every prayer, every single wish for Zoey to get through this. Because of all you, Zoey finally gets her happy ending, and we cannot thank you enough for allowing rescuers to nurse this sweet girl back to health and showering her with love for the rest of her life.
