Somehow, this tiny baby found herself in a horrid situation, tangled up in something that completely DESTROYED her back leg... As you can see from her photos, it was quite serious and looked absolutely excruciating for her.
When some locals were walking near their house, they heard a wailing cry from the woods nearby and tried to follow it to see how they could help. Days went by and they found nothing - until one miraculous morning. The homeowners tracked the cries down and came upon Harley stuck underneath an abandoned trailer. She was only about 10-12 weeks old! How did she end up there?! We had no clue.
There were tons of maggots in the wound and also severe bone exposure. Rescuers were fairly certain that she was battling an infection due to how severe the wound was and would likely need an amputation. She finally got to the ER and received pain meds, x-rays, bloodwork, and other appropriate diagnostics right away. Amputation was indeed needed and she was also severely anemic so she got a blood transfusion before surgery. Amputation was the best possible solution considering all the infection and muscle/bone exposure she had. Battling such a gnarly infection at a young age was not something rescuers wanted to put this little girl through. The vet believed amputating would remove all the infection before it spread to her hips which was exactly what they wanted to avoid.
Once she was discharged from the ER, she went back a couple of days later and unfortunately battled pneumonia. BUT she is such a strong girl at such a young age and fought through. She is still learning to adjust to life as a tripod but she's doing very well. And while she lost a limb, she gained a family! That's right! Harley has been ADOPTED!
Her wonderful forever family knew early on that Harley belonged to them so their adoption was finalized! Have a happy forever after, Harley! Additionally, she raised over $3500 for her medical care- all of which was possible because of her donors. Because of YOU she is SAFE and has the best life moving forward. Harley thanks you with all her heart for your kindness and generosity!
