Samantha was fighting for her life after being nearly mauled to death by two other dogs. Her skull was exposed, her ears shredded, there were holes all over her body...she needed help and FAST.
Samantha ended up in the care of a good samaritan who was looking after her and two other dogs. When she went to go pick up a chew bone in the yard, the attack started on her - and the two other dogs were relentless in their biting and tearing. By the time the three were separated, Samantha was ripped apart and losing so much blood. Other rescues offered to take her and cover her euthanasia cost, thinking there was no way she could be saved - but she was released to ThisIsHouston instead because they would fight for her. They wouldn't let her die without giving her every chance to live.
She spent the night at the ER with extensive injuries. Medical teams did wound cleanings, but she has lost so much soft tissue that specialty consultation had to be called on to see what can be done about patching her up. Her right ear was flapped over and hanging ? and ended up having to lose the entire ear and ear canal because of the damage and necrotic tissue present. She was then transferred to specialty care, where she has been hypotensive and hypoglycemic (low blood pressure and blood glucose). Because of this, no surgery could've been done on her yet. She had so many wounds that they would've connected under the skin causing a large air pocket on her back and under her neck which were filled with infection. Her facial wounds were near a lot of nerves so, after surgery, it was possible she would end up with facial nerve paralysis.
With all this treatment came a heavy price though. Over 10k in medical bills was accrued over time for Samantha's surgeries, hospitalization, and supportive care. But, thanks to wonderful CUDDLY donors who contributed thousands of dollars towards her medical expenses - and even sent her loving goodies for her recovery - rescuers were able to cover the cost of her care and help her heal from the trauma she faced. In the end, Samantha did end up losing her ear - but she persevered. She overcame. And after being with rescuers for 174 days, Samantha was transported to ThisIsHouston's rescue partners, Adoption First Animal Rescue KY, where she later was able to find her forever home!
Never again will Samantha know what it's like to be in pain, alone, and without a family. We are so thankful for each and every one of her CUDDLY donors and rescue team members; without you, her care and healing would not have been possible. Happy forever after, Samantha. You so deserve this happy ending!
