Huckleberry Finn

Once frightened and yearning for help, Huckleberry’s start to life was far from easy. When we found him clinging to some of our shelving with a swollen eye, we graciously welcomed him into our rescue, where his journey to healing officially began. Read on to discover how this feral kitty transformed into a beloved pet thanks to YOUR support!

Huckleberry, affectionately known as Huck, was formally a feral kitty who struggled on the streets. He was seen wandering around our rescue for weeks but kept his distance, darting off if we neared too close. One windy Tuesday, however, he was found seeking refuge within our shelter. Apparently, he had wandered right in through a back door that had blown open! Volunteers approached him carefully, heartbroken at the sight of his underweight frame and misshapen, swollen eye. Fortunately, he allowed us to pick him up and carry him inside, as though he knew that help had finally arrived. 

The transition was gradual; at first, Huck allowed petting only through the safety of his cage. Being close to a year old and having spent most of his life on the streets, he had likely experienced few interactions with humans. As the days went on, we gradually fed him nourishing food to help him regain healthy weight. With that, he began to trust us a little bit more. Eventually, the time came for his veterinarian appointment where we would have his eye properly assessed.

There, it was determined that his eye swelling was due to an old, untreated injury. He was diagnosed with iris bombe, a condition in which the iris sticks to the lens of the eye, causing the iris to swell forward. Vets provided him with some medication to treat the eye, and gradually, the swelling reduced. Huck also had a distended belly, which hinted at the possibility of worms. Therefore, he was treated for that as well!

Back at our rescue, Hucl began to steadily heal and emerge as a playful, energetic kitty. Day by day, his eye condition improved, and after just a week after starting his treatment, it had almost fully healed! He continued visiting the vet for routine check-ups and shots, but everything looked great. His distended belly went down, and he was gaining healthy weight. By the time his medication course neared its end, Huck transformed into a sweet and loving pet, ready for a forever home.

The heartening news came when Huck found his place with our rescue Vice President, Mary! He settled in immediately with his older doggie brother, Finn. How coincidental is that!? Huck and Finn love to play together, chasing each other around the house and snuggling up in bed. We are so glad that he has found such a wonderful home!
