Calvin

Calvin was found in the darkest corners of town, wounded and weary. Clinging to life next to his already deceased friend, he knew he couldn’t let that same pattern of brutality and abuse dictate his future reality. 

When a kind-hearted woman stumbled across this gentle giant on her way home, Calvin was nearing his final hours. He was riddled with bite wounds and could barely stand, let alone walk to safety. This woman, with every bit of strength she had, carried Calvin to her car and got him the medical help he so desperately needed. 

The vet treated everything they could initially, immediately scheduling a blood transfusion to up Calvin’s declining hematocrit levels (they were at a mere 17% when he was brought in) as well as prescribing a horde of extra-strength antibiotics and steroids to stabilize him for the time being. He also tested positive for heartworm, on top of everything he had been through! 

Calvin’s condition began improving at a snail-like speed. His hematocrit levels almost doubled (17% to 30% in just a few days), which came with a slow increase in energy and a returning appetite. However, there was still trouble ahead. Some of the bite marks and head wounds were deeper than initially thought, and his vision was becoming heavily impacted due to these injuries. And doctors still did not know if his gimpy front leg could be saved without restoring to amputation. 

Finally, there was good news. Calvin was able to begin laser therapy on his leg to stimulate and possibly speed up the healing process. With the support of his foster parents and the new community that had rallied around him, Calvin began to feel more whole and loved than he had in a very long time. Bit by bit, his strength improved and he began gaining steam and powering toward becoming the dog he was always destined to be. 

Just when he thought life couldn’t possibly get much better for him, he received the biggest surprise of all… Calvin’s foster family had decided to become his FUREVER family! 

After enduring so much hardship and tragedy, Calvin finally has his happy ending. This sweet boy has been adopted, and he and his new owners are a match made in heaven. We wouldn't have been able to get Calvin the life-saving care he needed without the generous support of many people who rallied together for our battered boy. From here on out, we’re sure Calvin will be treated to a life full of health and happiness.
