In the early days of Summer, Goldie (formerly known as Ruth) began her journey when a compassionate stranger stumbled upon her, injured and abandoned on the streets of Mexico. Goldie had been hit by a car and suffered paralyzing injuries. However, Goldie's abuse and mistreatment started long before that vehicle collided with her fragile body. Severely underweight and sporting a nasty scar around her neck, likely from pulling at a tether, we have no doubt that Goldie's life had been filled with heartache.
While Goldie might have once had a home, if you could even call it that, she had somehow found herself alone on the streets. Whether she was dumped by her owner or was struck by the car while making her escape, we will likely never know. The finder took Goldie to the nearest veterinarian for treatment. However, the vet had a questionable reputation and was ready to release her back to the unforgiving streets. Luckily, one of our amazing volunteers stepped in and extended a lifeline to this deserving pup, but not before she had undergone a botched amputation surgery.
Despite receiving antibiotics, a severe infection has taken hold, spreading rapidly throughout her fragile body. Goldie's only hope of survival was to undergo another surgery—a chance to eradicate the infection and offer her the gift of a pain-free existence. After everything she had been through, we refused to let Goldie suffer any longer. She was no more than 1.5 years old and had known nothing but pain. Our dedicated team of veterinarians performed an emergency surgery, giving her a renewed lease on life. However, the road to recovery was long and arduous.
Goldie's transformation had already begun, thanks to the extraordinary efforts of our dedicated team, but this sweet girl still had a long way to go. She weighed just under 20 pounds and was still extremely fragile. However, by mid-June, Goldie was showing signs of great improvement. She was still underweight and suffering from some tummy issues, but she was growing a little bit stronger with each passing day. It was at the end of June that we decided to officially change Goldie's name, to signify the bright and shining future that lay ahead of her.
While we were making progress in helping Goldie's body to heal, helping her mind recover from the trauma she experienced was an even greater hurdle. Goldie was so scared and fearful. It broke our hearts to see her cower and flinch at any sudden movement. Whenever we would pick her up, she would emit the most gut-wrenching cry of terror. Goldie spent the first few weeks in her foster home hiding from the other residents, however, after extensive coaxing and comforting from her dedicated new friends, Goldie began to come around.
Eventually, Goldie began to understand what it meant to be safe and loved, and she was beginning to transform into a confident pup. By July, Goldie reached 25 pounds, a healthy weight for a dog of her size. She had come so far and we were so incredibly proud of the progress she had made. Goldie was finally strong enough to be spayed, the bit of vetting she needed before she was ready for adoption. Goldie underwent her procedure at the end of the month, and after spending some time healing in her foster home, she was ready to find her forever family.
Watching Goldie's transformation has been unbelievably rewarding. This dog was destined to die on the streets of Mexico, but thanks to the amazing support of the CUDDLY community, Goldie was ready to be adopted. In October of 2023, Goldie found her forever family. We spent five weeks planning Goldie's journey to her new home, and before we knew it, our sweet girl was bound for Seattle where her new mom welcomed her with open arms. Goldie is one of the strongest dogs we have ever met, and we can't think of a pup more deserving of a happy ending.
