Macie

Macie was spotted darting across the road by an Amazon driver. Completely shocked by her emaciated condition, the driver slammed on the brakes to rescue her. Her bones protruded against her skin, and it was clear that her weakened muscles were causing extreme pain with each movement. Poor Macie was on the verge of collapsing at any moment.  After reaching out to us for help, our foster, Nancy, raced to the scene to meet the remarkable Amazon hero, ensuring Macie's safe passage into our care. 

Weighing a mere 16.8 pounds, when she should’ve been near 50-80 pounds, Macie's deteriorated frame showed us how her life was tormented by hunger and neglect. Our initial assumption was that she was a puppy, given her small size. However, her back teeth suggested maturity, indicating that she had been suffering from emaciation for several years. Hurriedly, we rushed her to our vet for blood work to determine the extent of her malnutrition and its negative effects on her body. 

We received some distressing news: the vet believed that she was likely locked in a cage and starved. Her feet and tail were stained with urine, and the positioning of the stain marks revealed that she had been confined in a small area for an extended period. To this day, our hearts still shatter at the thought of her enduring such horrid treatment for so long. 

Due to Macie's severe starvation, she could only handle a tiny portion of food. Her stomach was about the size of a golf ball and was extremely delicate. She was prescribed an expensive special diet costing around $175 per week. However, our main concern was her severe anemia. She was placed on iron supplements and would possibly need a blood transfusion as well. 

Overtime, Macie’s world glinted with a ray of newfound hope when slowly but surely, she began gaining weight. Her anemia corrected itself, thanks to the supplements, eliminating the need for any transfusions. Now, just a couple of months later, she is a happy and healthy pup, and we are beyond thrilled. 

Miraculously, she received the green light for vaccinations. From the depths of neglect and mistreatment, she had emerged as a shining example of resilience and love. Recently, Macie was also able to get spayed! 

Macie's transformation has been nothing short of remarkable. From the frail 16-pound, undernourished pup we first welcomed into our rescue, she has blossomed into a vibrant 30-pound pup. She has come such a long way! Despite the hardships she faced, Macie's spirit remains unbroken. She's like a ray of sunshine, always so excited to give love to everyone she meets. Seeing her happy spirit shine through is truly heartwarming.
