Layla

Layla’s story is a heart-wrenching tale of resilience and recovery. This golden retriever was found left for dead on the streets of Cairo, Egypt after a monster heartlessly slit her throat in an attempt to decapitate her. Discarded like trash, she suffered alone, crying feebly for refuge as blood pooled around her.

Thankfully, we rescued sweet Layla in the nick of time and transported her back to our facility, where she began her life-saving treatment. Her initial condition was critical, with a deep, gruesome wound stretched along her neck that bared a severe and life-threatening infection. Without wasting a single moment, we dove straight to work.

For weeks, Layla fought for her life in a local hospital. Although she desperately needed reconstructive surgery, her infection was initially too severe and had to be treated first. Multiple times a day, the vet team dressed her wounds with creams, honey, and bandages, slowly nursing her back to health. She was also on multiple medicines, including vitamins and pain medication. Thanks to the generous donations we received from YOU, we were able to acquire the supplies necessary to properly heal sweet Layla!

More good news soon followed. As the infections receded, we realized that Layla would probably no longer need surgery! Her wounds were healing almost entirely on their own thanks to the incredible work of our vet, which we were able to fund because of the generous donations we received! This would simplify the entire process. Now filled with a blossoming hope, we knew that with some more time, patience, and hard work from all of us, sweet Layla would be okay.

Throughout the entire process, Layla's spirit never waned. Despite the pain and agony she had endured, she remained a joyful, happy pup. Within a year, improvements were visible—her wounds had noticeably subsided, and her health started to stabilize. Following months of rigorous medical attention and boundless care from her rescuers, Layla eventually made a full recovery!

In 2023, after she had been in our care for an entire year, her story reached a joyful chapter. Layla was healthy enough to make a 'freedom flight' from Cairo to the United States, where she was adopted by a loving family in Kansas City, who renamed her Layla Mae Skywalker. Today, Layla is a vibrant, playful dog, cherishing each day with her new human brother and sister, a far cry from the sad, hurt creature she once was.
