Homer

Once a shadow of his former self, emaciated and riddled with painful wounds, Homer's story is nothing short of a miracle. This brave Basset Hound, once on the brink of death after a point-blank shooting, has defied all odds. His transformation will truly touch your heart.

Homer’s harrowing tale began on the desolate streets of Texas. Weak and emaciated, he wandered aimlessly, his frail body covered in cuts and gashes, with a large tumor pressing against his neck and a suspected gunshot wound to his head. It was truly a heartbreaking sight, and it wasn’t certain whether he was even going to make it.

Fortunately, fate had a different plan for Homer. Just before all hope was lost, he was found barely holding on. His finders rushed him to the local shelter in a desperate attempt to save his life. This is when our rescue was alerted, and we hastily took him into our care. It was at this moment that his journey to recovery officially began.

Upon arrival at our facility, Homer was in a critical state, his life hanging by a thread. We administered fluids, performed bloodwork, and carefully assessed his many wounds. Our hearts just broke at his terrible state; we were so confused as to how anyone could have treated him so terribly and for so long. Who did this to him!? But at that moment, all we could do was focus on healing him. Homer would need extensive medical care from our trusted vet; it was the only way to guarantee his survival. This poor boy!

Homer underwent multiple surgeries to address his condition, including the removal of a large tumor, which was suspected to be thyroid cancer. His wounds were properly dressed, and the gunshot wound was mended. He was also neutered, a necessary step in his long road to recovery. Though all odds seemed stacked against him, it quickly became clear that Homer was a fighter. And we were ready to fight alongside him.

In the early days of his recovery, a shocking turn of events took place. Homer was suddenly lethargic and struggled with energy, his body and spirit both exhausted from the trauma he had endured. We suspected that just before getting shot, he was in his last few hours. Every moment was crucial as we worked tirelessly to stabilize him. Thank goodness, he only got stronger from here.

As the weeks passed, Homer began to show signs of progress. However, further evaluations revealed that he was heartworm-positive, which was causing inflammation, and he had partial paralysis in his left eye and ear due to arthritis and his previous injuries. This was just another bump in the road, and we didn’t let it stop us. We just kept powering through, determined to save this brave boy.

Homer was properly treated for these conditions and only continued to get better! With each passing day, his strength grew, his incisions healed, and his anxiety began to fade. Though his vision and ear issues persisted, they did not worsen, a hopeful sign that he was on the mend.

The month of May marked a momentous milestone: it had been six weeks since Homer was rescued. The once frail and defeated Basset Hound now lives life as a strong and sturdy pup, ready to conquer anything. Despite the abuse and neglect he had endured for so long, Homer is now thriving. His transformation is nothing short of miraculous, and we are just so proud of him!
