Alice, Jill, Mollie and Roo

Once roaming freely across 15+ acres of open land, these four mini donkeys were living their best independent lives. However, donkeys do better with a smaller enclosure. As a result of so much open space, they developed some health concerns, including obesity and equine metabolic syndrome, a condition that can lead to issues like laminitis if not appropriately managed.

When Alice, Jill, Mollie, and Roo's owners were no longer equipped to care for them, they surrendered the donkeys to our care. We happily welcomed them, determined to guide them toward a healthier, happier future. These intelligent and social animals had minimal experience with people, which made them a bit tricky to catch at first. But with a little patience—and even the help of a professional cowboy to gently round up the last shy member of the group—the donkeys were safely brought to our rescue, together again as a herd.

Right from the start, the donkeys received gentle, individualized attention. They learned the ropes of halter-wearing, walking on leads, and getting cozy with regular grooming. Special attention was given to sweet Alice, who needed a little extra TLC for her sensitive feet, a result of too much sugar from the grass. Since she is a white donkey, she also arrives covered in sores from the relentless sun. She was treated with medication, comforted with a fly mask, and showered with love every step of the way.

As the weeks passed, something magical happened—the once-hesitant donkeys began to trust us. They enjoyed being brushed, pampered, and spending time with their human friends. Their personalities began to shine through, and their health steadily improved thanks to tailored diets, vet care, and lots of affection. 

Several months later, these four adorable donkeys were thriving. The inseparable pair Mollie and Roo quickly found their happily ever after with their new mom, Gabrielle. Soon after, Alice and Jill found their loving homes as well. Before we knew it, all four of them had healed and been adopted. It is such a joy to see them thriving so wonderfully! We are just so fortunate that we were able to help them in their time of need.
