Initially discovered abandoned, sick, and struggling to survive on the unforgiving streets of Peru, five resilient dogs have been given the ultimate gift—a new life filled with love, safety, and endless happiness. Thanks to the tireless efforts of rescuers and the generosity of compassionate people like you, these dogs have overcome unimaginable hardships and are now thriving with their forever families. Their journey from despair to joy is one of hope, healing, and the incredible power of second chances.
It all began in July 2021, when a CDC ban on dog imports left countless animals stranded in dangerous situations, including these five brave souls. Each of them carried a heartbreaking story. Basto, suffering from a disfiguring cancer, wandered the streets, weak and in pain, with no hope for survival. Thanks to life-saving medical intervention and unwavering care, Basto made a miraculous recovery. Selene, so emaciated she was mistaken for a rodent, clung to life as she scavenged for food. Slowly but surely, she regained her strength and her spark.
Killary, cruelly abandoned in a water cistern, was rescued just before her fragile body succumbed to her confinement, and embarked on a healing journey full of love. Waffle, the victim of a hit-and-run, suffered severe injuries but never gave up, proving to be a strong fighter. Through resilience and dedicated care, he healed and flourished. Manzana, relentlessly chased by a pack of dogs on the streets, lived in constant fear until she was rescued and placed in a safe, nurturing environment.
The challenges didn’t end there. With the CDC ban in place, these pups faced uncertain futures as they were unable to leave Peru. Despite having fully healed, eagerly awaiting their joyful endings, they were stuck, so close yet still, so far. But hope finally arrived when the ban was lifted (although harsh regulations remained). After months of waiting, each dog received the medical clearances, vaccinations, and microchips necessary to embark on their journey to the U.S. They had secured their permits, valid through August 31st, and freedom was suddenly just a flight away.
There was one final hurdle—delays in travel arrangements—but even that couldn’t keep them from their new lives. If they had arrived a day past August 31st, then the cost of their travel would double! Fortunately, however, they finally touched down in New York City just in the nick of time, ready for the fresh starts they so dearly deserved. After thorough vet checks, the real moment of joy arrived. Each pup was welcomed by a loving family, where they could leave their past behind for good and soak up the joy and happiness of their new chapter. Today, Basto, Selene, Killary, Waffle, and Manzana are not just survivors—they are thriving, cherished members of their new homes, surrounded by endless love and care.
These pup’s long, arduous journey has come to an end, and their new lives have just begun, filled with warmth, joy, and the security of knowing they are finally home.
