Herbie
This sweet boy has undergone a complete transformation before our eyes. When he first arrived at nine months old, he was no more than skin and bones with gruesome pressure sores on his hips. But after months of patience and a steady recovery, he has fully healed and is now living his dream life!
The start of Herbie’s story is heartbreaking. He had been confined to a crate for the first six to nine months of his life. Neglected and left to waste away, it was a miracle he was still alive. Sores had formed due to prolonged inactivity, and his paws were as flat as pancakes. He never got a chance at a real puppyhood.
Until he arrived at Mutt Misfits. Our team, devastated at the sight of him, was determined to do everything possible to change his life. We worked closely with the authorities to continue an active investigation into his case and were committed to ensuring that those responsible were held accountable for this cruelty. But our main priority was to do what we could to heal Herbie.
Herbie's body was so weak, with a dangerously low blood cell count and weakened ligaments. We immediately started him on a high-calorie, enriching diet to bolster nutrition and help him gain healthy weight. But because Herbie was so underweight, we had to administer the food cautiously. We gave him a much-needed nail trim, a gentle bath, and our vet performed careful wound care on his sores. They even dressed his sores with some comfortable padding to ease his pain when lying down.
Over time, thanks to our vet, our team members, and your generous donations, Herbie began to heal. He gained weight, his wounds were looking better, and he had more energy to get up and walk around. Even a healthy coat of fur began to grow in! He was neutered, fully vetted, and before long, was welcomed into a loving foster home. There, he continued to heal, and he quickly picked up training. Each time he had to go potty, he stood up and walked calmly to the door. What a smart boy!
Just a few months later, Herbie was ready for adoption. We could hardly believe it—he had made so much progress. Despite the trauma Herbie has endured, he has proven to be such a gentle and adorable boy. Although nervous around new people, he warms up eventually. He is good with cats, other dogs, and older children who are understanding of his situation. Snuggles on the couch are his favorite! Beneath all of that pain was a radiant and playful personality. It was truly amazing to witness.
The joyous day came when Herbie found his forever home! His new family just fell in love with him—how could they not? We are so happy for Herbie and this new, beautiful life. When we first laid eyes on him, he was barely hanging on. Now, he is like an entirely new dog, healthy and happy.
Your generosity made this happen. Thank you, again and again, for being the change Herbie needed to heal and begin again. Your kindness literally saves lives—we hope you know just how much we appreciate you. Sweet Herbie, we love you so much. We hope your life is filled with endless happiness!
