We can hardly wipe the smiles from our faces. Hortelã has endured so much at such a young age. But now? She’s absolutely thriving. There’s no way that we could have done this without you. Let’s take a moment to see how this beautiful story unfolded.

Hortelã was just six months old when she underwent a horrific, at-home botched amputation before being stuffed in a box. She was later tied up outside with a tightened belt as a leash, left to suffer under the sweltering heat. The pain she endured is unimaginable, and talking about it now breaks our hearts. The poor baby must have been so confused.

Our team worked together with local police to remove Hortelã from her abuser and bring her to the vet. The medical team dove into action to tend to the poor baby’s wounds. It’s likely that Hortelã suffered for days, if not weeks, without proper care.

Hortelã’s amputation site was carefully cleaned, and she was given pain medication to ease her discomfort. Most importantly, she was showered with love and care. We wanted her to know that she was safe, and she’d never endure pain like that again. We would make certain of it.

Day by day, Hortelã grew stronger. Her wounds healed, the light returned to her once-sunken eyes, and she even leaned into us for warmth and comfort. She’d give us gentle chin kisses and snuggle in close. She was learning that she could trust humans, and it was incredible to see.

Hortelã healed beautifully. So much so that, in almost no time at all, she was discharged to go home. But the wonderful news didn’t end there. Our precious girl captured the hearts of an incredible couple who promised to love, respect, and care for her for the rest of her life. They decided to adopt her and give her a home, providing her with the life she has always deserved.
