Ernie

Ernie sleeps in a bed of his own now. He has arms to snuggle into, people who will protect him for the rest of his life, and a body that is no longer wrapped in bandages. Four months ago, none of that seemed possible. 

When a Good Samaritan found Ernie hiding behind a garbage can, he was so emaciated that the notches in his spine were visible, and open wounds covered his legs and chest, exposing flesh and bone. He was brought straight to Famous Fido Rescue & Adoption Alliance, and we accepted his case in a heartbeat. Our veterinarian believed he had been deprived of food for months. He was rushed into emergency care in critical condition, and for weeks, his survival was never guaranteed. 

What followed was one of the hardest medical fights we have ever walked through. Ernie's wounds developed large areas of necrotic tissue and deep infection, and his red and white blood cell counts dropped dangerously low, leaving his body unable to carry oxygen or fight what was attacking it. He became septic. He suffered a stroke. There were days when he collapsed trying to stand, and days when we did not know if he would still be with us by morning. 

But Ernie kept choosing to stay. He received a blood transfusion, and slowly, his bloodwork stabilized and his wounds began to respond. His team flushed and redressed them constantly, sedating him when necessary, until they were finally healthy enough to be stitched closed. When fluid built up in his abdomen, a feeding tube was placed to support his nutrition and safely relieve the pressure. He stood on his own for the first time. Then he took his first long walk by himself. He was discharged in early May, returned to the vet every second day for three more weeks of wound care, and on May 22nd, his bandages came off for good. 

Through every bit of it, Ernie never lost his sweetness. He ate like a horse, wagged his tail a million miles an hour, and gave the softest snuggles to anyone who sat with him. Our volunteers visited him every single day, and he leaned into every hand that reached for him. After everything people had done to him, he still trusted us enough to rest his head in our palms. That is the part of Ernie's story we will never get over. 

On June 9th, we got to share the update we had all been waiting for. Ernie has been adopted. His new family looked past the wounds and the medical history and saw exactly who he is, and they chose him. He went home with every gift and comfort this community sent him, and he will never spend another night alone or afraid. 

Ernie is alive because thousands of people refused to look away from a starving dog behind a trash can. Every donation, every share, every message of encouragement from our CUDDLY family carried him from that alley to a couch of his own. This happy ending belongs to all of you, and we will never stop being grateful for it. Thank you.
