Petey

A few months ago, Petey was hours away from losing his life. Today, he is curled up in his forever home in Maryland, surrounded by a family who fell in love with him before he ever walked through the door. This is the story you made possible.

When we first shared Petey's story, he had spent months waiting patiently in his kennel, enduring one of the longest shelter stays volunteers could remember. He was only a year and a half old, and he had done everything right. Volunteers remembered how nervous he was in his early days, cautiously crawling through the grass as he tried to make sense of the noise and chaos around him. He found comfort standing near his friend Barney and looked to familiar faces for reassurance. Even through his fear, Petey wanted love, and he would slowly make his way over for pets. But while other dogs came and went, no one chose him, and he was placed on the euthanasia list.

That is when you stepped in. The window was closing, and dogs like Petey do not always get more time. Your donations made it possible for us to act when it mattered most, and we were able to pull him from the shelter just in time. That weekend, instead of spending another night in a kennel, Petey curled up in a warm bed in his Texas foster home. He got snuggles. He got treats. For the first time in a long time, he had the chance to just breathe.

Petey settled in like he had always belonged there. He slept soundly through the night, picked up his training with ease, and charmed everyone he met. Even the resident dog, who was notoriously unimpressed by newcomers, could not resist him and was already inviting Petey to play by the end of their very first walk together. His foster family adored him completely, and the nervous pup who once crawled through the shelter grass was learning what it feels like to be safe and loved.

Then came the news we had been hoping for. An adopter in Maryland came forward with an offer of forever. Petey boarded the transport van and arrived to a family who was already head over heels for him. The dog who waited so long for someone to choose him has finally been chosen.
