The pup who once tore at her own skin trying to escape the agony of maggots eating her alive is now healed, whole, and home. Zuri's wounds have closed, her fur has grown back, and after everything she endured, she has finally found a family who will cherish her forever.

When we first received the call about Zuri, we had to decide whether we could stretch ourselves and our resources even further, but walking away was never an option. The sight of her was devastating. Multiple wounds across her back near her tail were infested with maggots, her coat was completely matted and filthy, and her inflamed skin was crawling with ticks. She scratched nonstop, pulling out her own fur in desperation. By the time she arrived at the hospital, she had already developed a fever, a terrifying sign that infection was spreading through her body. Once we shaved away the matted fur, we found open, raw wounds filled with larvae, compromised tissue, and infection already taking hold. She had likely been suffering like this for days, maybe even weeks.

We began lifesaving treatment immediately. Her wounds were carefully cleaned, every visible maggot was painstakingly removed, and she was given pain medication to ease her suffering along with antibiotics to fight the infection threatening her life. She was closely monitored to make sure the infection had not spread further internally. Her recovery was never going to happen in a single day. It took repeated wound care, medication, parasite treatment, hospitalization, and constant attention, and through it all, Zuri never gave up.

Little by little, she healed. Her wounds closed, her skin recovered, and the pain she once lived in was finally behind her. She was vaccinated and spayed, and by late spring, her fur had grown back beautifully. The girl who arrived trembling and suffering in silence was now healthy, safe, and learning what love and care truly feel like. All that was left was finding the family she deserved.
