At just eleven weeks old, this gorgeous German Shepard nearly faced a tragic end. After he fell gravely ill, his owner decided he no longer wanted him. But we wanted him, and we were prepared to do whatever possible to save him. Now safely settled within our rescue, Lex is healed and living happily!

On April 22, 2022, our sanctuary was approached by a local vet regarding Lex, a young puppy with special needs. At just five weeks, Lex suffered from consistent vomiting and diarrhea. He was not provided proper care, and therefore, by eleven weeks, he was considerably more ill than the owner could handle. His owner decided to end his life altogether, but we quickly intervened before such a tragic act was executed. 

We promptly collected Lex and initiated diagnostic testing, not wanting this to be the end for such a sweet, innocent pup. Despite showing initial signs of recovery, Lex took a turn for the worse just five days later. He was rushed to an emergency hospital and underwent extensive surgery for intussusception in two places, resulting in the removal of his sphincter. Intussusception, a painful and life-threatening condition where one intestine slides into another, posed a great threat to his life.

Post-surgery, Lex remained in the ICU for seven days, fighting bravely for his life. To our amazement, his joyful spirit shone through, and he bounced back with an inspiring resilience. Returning to our sanctuary, Lex continued to grow and thrive under our care. Despite the ups and downs, including an additional emergency surgery after a colon rupture, Lex remained strong, persevering through it all.

With continued medical care and a specialized diet, Lex’s health improved steadily, and he transformed into the happy, playful pup he always had been deep inside. Though his IBD and occasional GI issues are lifelong, Lex's recovery has been nothing short of miraculous. The gravely ill puppy we once took into our care has melted away, leaving beyond an energetic, adorable boy.
